Dear Readers,
As we slide into March, there are many cross-cultural events to partake in.
The always-fun 43rd Annual San Diego Chinese New Year Fair takes place Saturday and Sunday in the downtown Asian Pacific Historical District. In anticipation of the Cherry Blossom Festival in mid-March, there will be a Hanami (flower) picnic at the Japanese Friendship Garden on Saturday. A Nepalese Holi Celebration will also take place at SDNA on Saturday. Another Saturday event is the Caliente Spirits Fest at Sinclair on G Street. Next Friday, the 8th Annual International Women’s Day Celebration will be held at Bali Hai on Shelter Island.
Music and dance concerts include Ozomatli at Music Box tonight; the Angelus Sacred Music Concert at USD on Saturday; The Art of Tango at the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center (also Saturday); the Young Dubliners at the Belly Up on Sunday; and Italian vocalist Giorgia Renosto at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library on Monday. The Chucho Valdés & Arturo Sandoval Legacy Quintet at the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center, originally scheduled for next Wednesday and Thursday, has moved to June 9th.
There are numerous talks around town to expand your general awareness of important topics. On Saturday at the Carlsbad Library, Carole Boyce, Poet Laureate of the North County African American Women’s Association, will give a talk titled Echoes of Harlem: Music & Words that Changed America. On Monday at UCSD, there will be a Native American and Indigenous Research Symposium. On Wednesday at UCSD, there will be a roundtable discussion on The New Imperialism. Next Thursday at the UCSD School of Global Policy and Strategy, there will be a talk titled How States and Cities Are Making (and Breaking) U.S.-China Relations.
The Oceanside International Film Festival wraps up on Sunday, so act fast if you want to check it out. On Tuesday, the Digital Gym will screen the classic Italian film Conversation Piece, starring Burt Lancaster.
Theatrical productions include Community Actors Theatre’s (which wraps up Sunday); Henrik Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler at the Old Globe (extended through 3/15); Somewhere Over the Border at the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Performing Arts Center in Liberty Station; and The Recipe at the La Jolla Playhouse.
Art events include tonight’s artist talk with Sarah Tang at Native Star Boutique; the Full Circle—The Teachings and Her Legacy exhibition honoring the work of Faith Ringgold at UCSD on Saturday; an art exhibition and sale at UCSD featuring works by the late Serbian American fine artist Arso Ivanovich next Tuesday at the U.S. Arts Education Center; and the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library exhibition The Beginnings of the Buddha Image in India and Central Asia (also Tuesday).
Other notable events include Saturday’s Keepers of Culture at the San Diego History Center in celebration of Black History Month; the Believe in Ukraine event at Mesa College (also Saturday); Noche de Cuba: A Havana-Inspired Evening, which combines music, dance, and food; and next Wednesday’s book talk at UCSD with Benjamin Crump, who will discuss his book Worse Than a Lie: The Fight for Truth & Justice
Lastly, the Worldview Project, which produces this newsletter every week (and does lots of other stuff too!), is a non-profit organization. Supporting cross-cultural awareness, understanding, and engagement has never been more critical than it is now. As you may have noticed, we don't annoy you with advertisements or constant fundraising appeals. But we need your support to continue to do what we do. In particular, we are seeking our readers' help in funding the further development of our Cultures in the Classroom™ curriculum project to inspire children to connect with and appreciate the wonder of cultures around the world. You can show your support by clicking on the "Donate to the WVP" button above and making a tax-deductible donation to the WVP. No donation is too small— even a dollar would be appreciated!
